In our continuing coverage of the new “Guitar Hero: Smash Hits” game, we present to you the final results of our reader poll.

We closed our reader poll today on what songs you, the reader, think should have made it it into the 48-song setlist for “Guitar Hero: Smash Hits”.

We got 30 responses, and while the results of this poll are in no way scientific, it gives a general sense of the songs our readers wanted against the songs actually announced in the game.

And for the most part, the “want” list of the people doesn’t match up against the songs actually included in the game, but out of the top 80 songs selected by our readers, over 40% of those songs make the cut into the game.

Songs in blue and bold are in the game. Songs in red are not. You’ll notice that only three songs in here cracked the top 11, a fairly poor showing in my opinion.

So, if we line up the songs by approval rating, from “Sweet Child O’ Mine” which got 47%, down to the myriad of songs that got 0% of the vote, you can rank them 1 to 222. You’ll notice that the Aerosmith song “Back In The Saddle” isn’t on here, and that’s because when we created the poll the news from Activision was that songs from Guitar Hero: Aerosmith weren’t going to be included.

Overall, most of the songs that were selected from the game are indeed weighted towards the top of this list, but I for one am disappointed in the final setlist.

So on Offworld, a gaming blog I read, they’ve started this thing called ‘backgames’, which is to describe a game backwards.

Here’s an example:

Pacman: Pacman fills mazes with dots, pausing only to regurgitate fruit & ghosts.

I think this is awesome to the max.  I’ve come up with some of my own, and I think everyone should play along.

R.C. Pro Am: Fastest car in the world drives backwards, spitting out letters that spell ‘ODNETNIN’ until it is really, really slow.

Super Mario 2: Mario falls asleep, runs through deserts and grassy plains planting vegetables until floating up to the heavens.

Tiger Woods Golf: Ball emerges from hole and launches itself to player’s club until reaching the tee box. Repeat 18 times.

Mario Party: Players move backwards on a gameboard in a charitable quest to give away all their stars and coins until they have none.

Star Wars Battlefront 2: Stormtrooper resurrects Rebels by sucking in blastershots and bombs until there are 150 of them.

Bust-A-Move: Same-colored bubble clusters appear and dinosaur removes them until a nice pattern of random-colored ones are left.

If you post on Twitter, add “#backgames” to each of them because when you search “#backgames” on Twitter you’ll get all the posts that other people have backgamed about.

Tetris: The parts of a horribly constructed building start floating away to the heavens while rotating in a random way.

Donkey Kong (arcade): Donkey Kong brings Mario a princess. The sight of her scares him though, so Mario tries to flee down a series of ladders.

Mortal Kombat: One player puts back together the other player’s body and they fight it out until they feel perfectly healthy at the end.

NBA Jam: The basketball hoop throws a flaming ball repeatedly to Dan Majerle.

PiFry:

NHL ’94: Basically a giant game of keepaway with nets that spit out pucks.  Also, the goalies are nice enough to help people off the ice.

John Madden Football: Receiver’s revenge!  Everyone throws balls at the quarterback.  Defensive backs thoughtfully help people up and get out of the way.

Super Smash Brothers: Looks exactly the same, except people come flying in from the sides, jump kick from really far away, and ascend to heaven on glowing platforms.

Minesweeper: OCD players fix a diverse mix of tiles until only smooth gray ones remain.

Solitaire: 4 holes suck up an entire deck worth of cards, then distribute them in an odd pattern.

Marble Madness: Looks exactly the same.

Ocarina of Time: Old warrior discovers fountain of youth, abandons princess to evil monster as he returns to childhood by giving away all his worldly possessions (very Buddhist).

And finally, PiFry take a jab at my card-playing skills:
Poker: Corey accumulates money at a decent rate over a period of several hours.

Drew, who apparently has expanded this to non-video games:

Monopoly: The wealthiest players are apparently hit with antitrust laws, give everything away until socialism reigns.

Jeopardy: Players ask Alex Trebek extremely obvious questions, which he answers in the most difficult way possible.

Baseball: Random fan makes herculean 400 ft throw to strongman, who uses a stick to deflect it to a man about 60 ft away.

Pong: exactly the same as regular Pong.

There are a few things that I’m excited about here:

1. Drums
B. Microphone
π. Customizable Characters
µ. Build-A-Song Mode
£. Downloadable Content for the Wii

I’ve already logged way too many hours playing Guitar Hero III, and I anticipate logging way too many more by playing pretend drums and honing my karaoke skills.

According to Wikipedia, Van Halen, The Eagles, Linkin Park, and Sublime have been confirmed to be a part of the game. However, there was no citation, so who knows if that’s actually true. I am tempted to add my own choice selection of artists, including Warren Zevon and The Glenn Miller Orchestra.

However, if I had to pick one song from each artist, here would be my choices:

Van Halen – Eruption. While it doesn’t have any words, it would be one of the most ridiculous guitar pieces to date in Guitar Hero.

Eagles – Life in the Fast Lane. Hotel California is probably going to be in the game, but the Life in the Fast Lane with it’s sick licks would be a great addition. And yes, I just said “sick licks”.

Linkin Park – Bleed It Out. Simple but good guitar work.

Sublime – What I Got. Because everyone knows the lyrics already.

While we’re at it, I’m going to suggest a few more songs that should be in the newest edition of the game:

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Snow (Hey Oh). A song with fairly repetitive bass and guitar parts, it’s very catchy and would be great for an earlier tier song.

The Animals – House of the Rising Sun. A great guitar piece.

Jimi Hendrix – All Along the Watchtower. Why HASN’T this song already been in Guitar Hero?

Jealousy Curve – Black Widow. A local Philadelphia band, I’ve heard this song on WMMR a lot. The guitar part changes up a lot and would offer a good challenge.

Maroon 5 – Harder to Breath. Although the lyrics are probably a bit racy.

Beatles – Twist and Shout. Because I already sing this every time at karaoke, so I might as well keep score of how well I do.

Moby Dick – Led Zeppelin. Obvious choice to highlight the capabilities of the drums, although there are no lyrics.

Pink Floyd – Money. Because this song is so money and it doesn’t even know it.

Crazy Train – Ozzy Osbourn. Long overdue to be in Guitar Hero.

I’ll probably think of more songs over the next couple of days. What other songs should be part of the game?

Dear Super Smash Bros Brawl,

You come out tonight at midnight. After an initial December launch date, then a delay to February, and then another delay until March 9, the day has finally arrived where we will finally meet.

Ever since I bought my Wii in 2007, I have been waiting for today. All I’m saying is that you better be the most awesome game ever. The last time I was this excited about getting a video game, it was Where In Time Is Carmen Sandiego for the NES. And that game came with a desk encyclopedia which you used to help beat it. True story: I still have that Encyclopedia.

My pre-launch pick for favorite character is going to have to be Lucas. I’ve sworn by Ness for years, but given everything I’ve read and seen (yes, I enjoy perusing various video game websites) Lucas is my initial pick.

Nerd Alert Approaching! GameStop is hosting the start of Brawl tournaments this afternoon. Basically, you go to a store and fight it out in 1-minute KO matches in a single-elimination bracket until there’s a store winner. Then you go one of 271 district sites the next weekend and if you win that, a regional competition two weeks after. If you’re still alive, you get an all expense trip to San Diego to compete in the finals. Round 1 recap will be forthcoming this evening.

Brawl, the updated Wii version of the Smash Bros. franchise (due out in February 2008).

This got me thinking about what other characters and items I would like to see included in the game.

Characters (Listed in likeliness that I think they’ll actually include them in the game)

Toad

First Nintendo Appearance: Super Mario Bros. (1985)

Seriously, aren’t you tired of him always telling you that the princess is in another castle? It’s time to unleash a beating on the little pipsqueak.

Proposed Smash Attack: Something involving the vegetables from Super Mario Bros. 2

Dry Bones Scores Another Goal!Dry Bones

First Nintendo Appearance: Super Mario Bros. 3 (1989)

Dry Bones is arguably the best sidekick in Mario Strikers Charged. My roommate and I both agree that this celebration dances are clearly the most entertaining, and it’s about time that they included a skeleton into Smash Bros.

Proposed Smash Attack: Cranium Crunch (Throwing his head at opponents)

Mega Man

First Nintendo Appearance: Mega Man (1987)

Mega Man would be have the highest probably of being another third-party character included in Smash. This is based on complete scientific fact (and by “scientific fact” I mean “my personal preference based on no research whatsoever”). He would be about the same size as Ness, he has all sorts of random attacks he can do, and would be a great compliment to the Smash family.

Proposed Smash Attack: The ability to use some of the various weapons he gets after defeating the Robot Masters

Black Mage

First Nintendo Appearance: Final Fantasy (1990)

This one isn’t that much of a stretch considering that you could play as Black Mage in Mario Hoops 3-on-3.

Proposed Smash Attack: FIR3 and ICE3

This would be awesome and you know itTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

First Nintendo Appearance: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1989)

This would be ridiculously awesome, and you know it. Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael are perfect for this game. They fight, they all have weapons already, and their taunt would be “Cowabunga”. You can even add the pizza power-up as a damage reducer. Nintendo, just go ahead and put all four of them in the game, please.

Proposed Smash Attack: Katana, Bo Staff, Nunchuck, and Sai

Chun-Li

First Nintendo Appearance: Street Fighter II (1992)

She has fighting skills, lightning kicks, and her taunt can be that “Yatta!” thing she does after defeating an opponent.

Proposed Smash Attack: Spinning Bird Kick and Lightning Kick

Assist Trophies

These are a new concept to the Smash Bros. World, but as the game continues to grow in scope and size and randomness, I propose the following things be added as Assist Trophies.

Apparently these are Tetris pillowsTetris Pieces

With this Assist Trophy, random Tetris pieces would fall from the sky, building a temporary wall between you and your opponents. You would then have to break down the wall with a smash attack, or maybe a magical long piece would fall from the sky, completing a Tetris, and clearing the blocks from your path. In other news, www.gamefaqs.com is doing their annual character battle, and the L-Block from Tetris has made it into the Round of 32. Go L-Block!

Kung-Fu

The Kung-Fu Master from the Nintendo game Kung Fu will come out, kick a few enemies, and then disappear to go fight more ninjas.

Hero Paperboy Stops Thief!Paperboy

The Paperboy will come riding in on his bike, throw a few papers through windows, and then get chased away by the dog.

Tecmo Super Bowl Football

This Assist Trophy wouldn’t do anything to anyone on the stage, but the game would pause and the Tecmo Super Bowl halftime routine would play. Once it was over, play would resume.

Items

1-up, my life motto1-up Mushroom

The 1-up mushroom would give the player an extra life in stock battle, and would knock down a player’s KO number in timed mode. You wouldn’t restore any health with it, but you would get to hear that cool 1-up sound every time someone got one.

Warp Whistle

From Super Mario Bros. 3, this item would transport you to a random part of the stage.

That’s all I can muster up for now. I’ll probably think of more as the launch of the game gets closer.
