I’m taking an open call on books that I should read.
I’ll be taking some trips soon that will involve lots of travel time and lots of free time, and since I can’t sit still for more than three minutes at a time, I’d like some books to read.

I believe another longtime reader of your blog will agree with me:
A Canticle for Leibowitz

Seeing as I mostly read government related or history books, I’ll spare you from those offer three recommendations that might tickle your fancy depending on the mood.
In the mood to laugh your ass off: “I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell” by Tucker Max
It’s a good book if you just want to pick up something to read for a little bit as it isn’t a continual narrative but rather a collection of stories. In fact some of his stories are online to read for free via http://www.tuckermax.com/
In the mood to read something inspiring: “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson
Just read the reviews on amazon and you’ll see why I recommended it.
In the mood to read the greatest book to ever be written by man: “Catcher in the Rye”
I know you and probably everyone else who reads your blog has already read the book but it just never gets old. I make sure to always have a copy around to read every few years.

I concur with Rhyno’s suggestion, and a few to add myself.
All the King’s Men – by Robert Penn Warren. Truly excellent, writing style similar to F. Scott Fitzgerald, if you ask me. The story of the rise and fall of a man in early 20th century politics.
Mitch Albom’s books– Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven. If you’ve read Mitch’s Detroit-area sports column, you’ll definitely want to read his books.
Trinity by Leon Uris. The first book I ever read that would have been an R rated movie (I was 11 or 12 and quite captivated by words like “bosom”). Don’t worry, I read it again recently and was just as enthralled even without the cheap thrills. This one’s long, a real doozy, maybe something to take on a plane or to grab if you are sick over a long weekend.
I also have a fair amount of Sci Fi recommendations, so if you are in the mood for that, let me know and I’ll toss some out.

Definitely just finishing the Harry Potter series – and I recommend them VEHEMENTLY. These books are not going to win any awards for groundbreaking style or deep philosophical meaning, but they are very well written, and extremely engaging. Plus, they will take quite some time for you to get through!
